Cultural Significance

What is the Kolhapuri Saaj?

The Kolhapuri Saaj (कोल्हापुरी साज) is Maharashtra's most sacred and revered gold necklace — the centrepiece of a Maharashtrian bride's jewellery. It is a handcrafted 22 Karat gold necklace featuring 21 individual gold pendants (motifs), each representing a deity or sacred symbol connected to the rich spiritual tradition of Maharashtra.

The Kolhapuri Saaj is inseparable from Goddess Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) — the presiding deity of Kolhapur, one of India's sacred Shakti Peethas. The necklace is considered a form of divine blessing and protection for a married woman. It is worn at weddings, religious ceremonies, and auspicious occasions — and is passed down from mother to daughter as a sacred family heirloom.

Each Kolhapuri Saaj at Surajmal Fulchand Jewellers is made entirely by hand by master karigar artisans using techniques passed down through generations. The jav mani and tarboose mani gold beads that form the chain are individually handmade. A single Saaj takes up to a week to complete. Every piece is BIS Hallmarked with a HUID number from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
