The Kolhapuri Saaj (कोल्हापुरी साज) is a traditional Maharashtrian gold necklace and the single most important piece of jewellery in a Maharashtrian bride's set. Unlike any other necklace in India, it carries 21 individually handcrafted gold pendants — each representing a deity or auspicious symbol from the rich sacred tradition of Maharashtra. It is also called the "21-wati Saaj" or simply "Saaj" by Marathi-speaking families. The necklace is deeply connected to the blessings of Goddess Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) of Kolhapur — one of the Shakti Peethas of India — and is considered a lifelong heirloom passed from mother to daughter.

The Kolhapuri Saaj originated in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and is inseparable from the tradition of the Mahalakshmi temple in the heart of the city. Each piece is crafted using jav mani (small elongated gold beads) and tarboose mani (larger rounded gold beads) — two types of handmade gold beads that form the main body of the chain. These beads are themselves crafted by karigar artisans and are unique to Kolhapuri jewellery tradition.

The 21 Motifs of the Kolhapuri Saaj — What They Represent

Each of the 21 motifs on the Kolhapuri Saaj is individually handcrafted by a karigar (artisan) and carries deep religious and cultural significance rooted in Maharashtrian sacred tradition:

1. Kirtimukh The fierce face of glory, representing divine protection and the primordial power of Shakti. Placed as the central pendant.
2. Goddess Mahalakshmi The presiding deity of Kolhapur, representing wealth, prosperity, and the soul of the Saaj.
3. Ganesh The remover of obstacles, placed first for auspicious beginnings in married life.
4. Saraswati Goddess of learning and wisdom, bringer of clarity, arts, and speech.
5. Om The primordial sound of creation, the cosmic vibration at the heart of all mantras.
6. Lotus (Padma) Symbol of purity, divine beauty, and the ability to rise unblemished from difficulty.
7. Conch (Shankh) Symbol of the ocean, of auspicious sound, and of Lord Vishnu's grace.
8. Kalash with Mango Leaves The pot of abundance and new beginnings, used in every auspicious Maharashtrian ritual.

15. Naagphani The serpent's hood, symbol of protection, fertility, and the earth's deepest energies.
16. Trishul Shiva's trident, symbol of power over creation, preservation, and destruction.

Why Each Kolhapuri Saaj Takes Up to a Week to Make

Each of the 21 motifs is individually cast, filed, and polished by hand — a process that cannot be rushed without compromising quality. The jav mani and tarboose mani beads that form the chain are also individually made and strung by skilled karigar artisan hands. No two Kolhapuri Saaj are identical. Each is a unique heirloom — which is why a handcrafted Saaj from a local karigar jeweller will always hold more meaning than a machine-made piece.

Surajmal Fulchand Jewellers — a BIS Hallmarked gold jewellery shop at 46 C, Gujari Bazar, Kolhapur, founded in 2009 — handcrafts Kolhapuri Saaj in 22 Karat (916 purity) gold. Each piece carries a BIS Hallmark with a verifiable HUID number. We recommend placing your order at least 10–15 days before your wedding or occasion.
